Movie releases for the week of March 5: Diplomacy 300: Birth of an Empire, In the Shadow of Mary

This week at the movies, Dussollier faces Niels Arestrup and Walt Disney to the author of Mary Poppins . Artemisia and Xerxes them out altogether arms !Choice # 1 : Diplomacy Volker Schlöndorff with Dussollier , Niels Arestrup ...Synopsis: On the night of August 24 to 25, 1944 . The fate of Paris is in the hands of General Von Choltitz , Governor of Grand Paris , who is preparing on the orders of Hitler, to blow up the capital. Coming from a long line of Prussian military general has never hesitated when he had to obey orders.
This is what concerns the Swedish consul Nordling when climbed the secret staircase which leads to the following General at Hotel Meurice . The bridges over the Seine and the main monuments of Paris Le Louvre , Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower ... - are undermined and ready to explode. Using all the weapons of diplomacy, the consul will try to convince the general not to execute the order of destruction.

Notice of First : Adapted from the play by Cyril Gely , Diplomacy does not fully assume its theatrical origins and fate of the camera filming the area around the hotel and the movements in the corridors. Since the end we know - Paris , was not destroyed - the strength of the film lies entirely in the face- to-face two men, the quality of the text and the power of conviction of the actors. Niels Arestrup and Dussollier , like two lions in a cage, turn around, sniff and tame each other. The ballet of big cats that governs their trade alone is a fascinating spectacle. Their rhetoric duel seem to chat a few malcontents .
However, without downtime or extreme gestures , in a film grammar alternating overall plans and reverse-angle , this classic but effective work brings to the screen a moment of history revisited that could change the face of the capital or the world.

Choice # 2 : In the Shadow of Mary : the promise of Walt Disney, John Lee Hancock, starring Emma Thompson, Tom Hanks ...Synopsis: When Walt Disney girls begging him to adapt to film their favorite book, "Mary Poppins" , it made a promise ... it will take twenty years !In his quest to obtain the rights to adapt the novel, Walt Disney will encounter the author , Pamela Lyndon Travers, stubborn and inflexible woman who has no intention of leaving his beloved heroine being bullied by Hollywood machine. But when the book sales begin to dwindle and the money runs out , she accepts against the heart to go to Los Angeles to hear that Disney has created ...During two intense weeks in 1961 , Walt Disney will struggle to convince the novelist . Armed with storyboards packed with imagination and bouncy composed by the talented brothers Sherman songs, he threw all his forces in the offensive, but the author does not give suspicious . Helpless, he sees the project gradually escape ...It is only looking in the past PL Travers , especially in childhood , he will discover the truth about the ghosts that haunt . Together, they will eventually create one of the most memorable in the history of the 7th art movies ...Notice of First : It had everything to fear from the Disney feature film featuring the creator of the famous studio. But if the great Walt appears as a jovial and friendly man ( the picture is slightly ironic ) , it is in this case not the subject of the film , which focuses on PL Travers monster neuroses and fragility viscerally attached to his imaginary nanny. Skilled flashbacks tell the child that Australian torn between an alcoholic father she adored and a depressed mother she knew . Gradually, with the help of this beautifully sketched scenes , disturbing portrait emerges of a spinster haunted by a past she exorcised in part in his work. We bet you'll never look Mary Poppins the same way.

Choice # 3 : 300 : Birth of an Empire by Noam Murro , with Eva Green, Sullivan Stapleton ...Synopsis: New chapter of the saga 300 , 300: the birth of an empire takes place this time at sea ...The Greek general Themistocles facing the invincible armada Persian , led by the god-king Xerxes and the dreaded Artemisia, at the head of the Persian navy.Aware that his only hope of defeating the enemy is to unite all the forces of Greece, Themistocles engages in a battle that will forever change the course of the war.Notice of First : Originally presented as a prequel , this new 300 is ultimately a " paraquel " since the action takes place before , during and after the events described in the previous film by Zack Snyder. In addition to allowing producers to capitalize on the success of a feature that does not really called on (remember that 300 0 found themselves at the end) , the trick also ensures thicker than the first scenario whose complexity was inversely proportional to the circumference biceps Gerard Butler. Australian Sullivan Stapleton revealed by Animal Kingdom, David Michôd , provides brilliantly succession in sandals Themistocles the Athenian responsible for gathering his people to defeat King Xerxes , a follower of bling and piercing. Author of one film before this one ( the comedy Smart People , in 2009, with Dennis Quaid and Sarah Jessica Parker) , Noam Murro has made a name in the pub, as Snyder before him. If it meets the aesthetic defined by its predecessor , the director has overcome a number of errors of taste which sometimes made 300 indigestible , starting with this overdose of slow threatening terribly wrong age. This is perhaps one of the reasons why this Birth of an Empire , we have the right to prefer the original, shorter than fifteen minutes.  .
